Hot Sauce Review

 HeatFlavourRatingScore
Bufalo Salsa Jalapeno Rojo 5.5 8.0 8.5 6.98
This is a thick, tasty and tangy sauce with a strong Jalapeno flavour that has a strong Louisiana sauce quality to it. The flavour is rich, and despite the strong vinegar taste, is well suited to a wide variety of foods - especially chicken. This sauce is essentially interchangable with most louisiana sauces, but due to it's thick consistency, it is somewhat more versatile. You can easily brush this sauce on meats or veggies before grilling, and it stays put in a nice pool on your plate or food. It compliments soups well, due to it's mild heat level and strong flavour. An excellent sauce to keep by the grill or on the table. The only downside is that this sauce is often difficult to find, although it is usually pretty inexpensive when you do. Get a bottle and try it for yourself!

Byron Bay Green Jalapeno Chilli Sauce With Coriander 4.0 7.5 8.9 6.92
Another hot sauce from the Australian Byron Bay Chilli Co., this sauce is for those of you looking for something a little different. The flavour is very "green" and the heat is, well, practically nonexistant. For some reason, I feel tempted to mix this up into a tartar sauce, or at least dump it all over my fish and chips. Aside from it's unusual flavor, this sauce is pretty good. The mild heat and subtle - yet distinct - flavor means that this sauce is a versatile tool to use with a variety of foods that generally don't work with most sauces. And while I don't propose that you place a bottle of this on the table next to the Chateau Margaux, at least keep and open mind when faced with an exotic dish that needs that certain "jazzy something" that you, and only you can appreciate. Just don't let anyone see you as you douse their creation in this green, gooey goodness.

Denzel's Mom's Apple Pie 2.5 8.5 8.5 6.82
This sauce confuses me. It tastes like apple pie filling, which is a very strange thing to be dousing on your food. For the life of me, I can't figure out what to put it on! Perhaps it is a dessert hot sauce, intended for liberal application to ice cream or pie; or perhaps some foods actually will work well with this intriguing sauce - although I haven't found any yet. Although this sauce tastes really good, it's difficult to position it accurately amongst other sauces and therefore any rating given would certainly be misplaced. Points awarded for originality, creativity and taste. Recommended for the adventurous.

An update from Denzel himself: "It goes great on anything that used to go OINK! I put it on pork chops, and it's great painted on pork roasts. I really like it on salmon as well. I use it as a glaze or finishing sauce. It's also real good on veggies and rice. The mango and the peaches are similar and can be used the same way."

ABC Tropical Chili Sauce 6.2 8.9 7.5 6.77
A thick, spicy and delicious sauce with a sweet garlic flavor. Comes in a bottle that makes it look a little like ketchup and tastes pretty good on anything that you'd put ketchup on. As an added bonus, you can get this stuff pretty cheap, so go get some and try it on your dogs, burgers, chips, chicken, wings... keep a bottle on the table at your next BBQ!

Tapatio Hot Sauce 7.0 7.5 8.0 6.74
A very hot Mexican sauce with an excellent balance between flavor and heat. A good choice for any Mexican dish; the only downside to putting a bottle of this on the table is it's rather bland looking label. A good, well rounded sauce that's worth a try, especially as it is very inexpensive, and usually widely available. The taste will prove familiar to Mexican food enthusiasts, it's somewhat similar to a number of other Mexcian hot sauces. An excellent choice for amateur chiliheads or if you're looking for a straightforward sauce that won't break the bank or excommunicate a portion of your guests... Try it, you'll like it.

Denzel's Pineapple Punch 7.0 7.5 8.0 6.74
This thick sauce boasts a medium heat and a slightly sweet flavour that complements it's unique pineapple taste very well. This sauce would work well brushed on meats or as a dipping sauce; it works especially well on chicken, lamb or pork; put a bottle on the table next time you serve pork chops and you'll receive compliments on the best meal your guests will have had in a long time. Or try it as a glaze for chicken or turkey; the sugars in this sauce will caramelize nicely forming a deliciously surprising twist to some of your favourite foods. If I ever cook a wild boar on a spit, this is the sauce I'll bring along.

Jim Beam Hot Sauce 7.5 7.3 8.0 6.74
This sauce is unique in both it's flavor and ingredients. It's the only hot sauce that I've encountered that contains alcohol. The flavor is mild, smokey and mellow with a distinct hint of Whiskey, chiles and black pepper. Unfortunately the chile flavor is mild and somewhat overpowered by the other ingredients, however if you don't mind, the other flavors blend to give a subtle nuance to whatever you splash it on. The Jim Beam Hot Sauce is also fairly thin which makes it difficult to keep it where the action is.. on your food. It's also quite hot, but you wouldn't know it from a quick taste. As you enjoy the flavor this distince sauce has attributed to your meal, the heat builds to the point where you can barely handle it; although a quick break gets you back on track. I'm sure that the alcohol content plays some strange tricks with conveying the heat, as alcohol acts as a solvent for Capsaicin as the heat level of this sauce seems inconsistent and difficult to identify. Ideally suited for steaks, but try it on what-have-you for a pleasant surprise.

Denzel's Peaches and Scream 6.8 7.2 8.0 6.65
An unusual sauce with a roasted peach flavour and not too much heat that complements exotic dishes well, especially those with plenty of vegetables. And while the heat isn't overpowering, this sauce is fueled by those ubiquitous Habanero Chiles which means that you can expect a nice even burn without too much abrupt pain. This sauce works well as an addition to many dishes from both the heat and flavour angles, and could well be considered a vital ingredient as opposed to an addition. Worth a try for the adventurous!
